Villages of Seloy | North Florida Condos

What’s In A Name?

Behind every name is a story, oftentimes one of great tradition or history. St. Augustine’s Villages of Seloy takes its moniker from a fascinating time in Florida’s past, when Spanish colonization was the order of the day in the New World.

Founded in 1565 by Pedro Menendez de Aviles of Spain, Northeast Florida’s St. Augustine enjoys the distinction of being our nation’s oldest port city. In founding the first permanent European settlement, Menendez landed with 800 people in the vicinity of the Mission of Nombre de Dios – Shrine of Our Lady La Leche, and the Fountain of Youth — the site of the ancient Timucuan Indian village of Seloy. The council house that was presented to the Spaniards by Chief Seloy served as their very first fortress.
